As the weeks have gone on, she’s started to lean on Jack Branning for support, at the same time that his marriage to Denise Fox was falling apart.

In tonight’s episode, Jack and Denise’s attempts to reconnect went spectacularly wrong when Jack thought his wife was having another affair, before saying he no longer trusted her.

Denise packed her bags and headed to Patrick’s, while Jack ordered a pizza with plans to wallow at home alone over his seemingly failed marriage.

But as he accepted his delivery, Stacey was passing and apologised for being angry with him over Eve and Theo earlier in the day.

Jack ended up inviting her in and the pair shared the pizza as well as a bottle of wine.

Stacey was about to head home when Jack suggested they open the nice bottle of red that he’d bought for Denise earlier in the day, and Stacey accepted.

The sexual tension between the two increased as they talked about their pasts and at one point Stacey even said Jack sounded like his brother Max, who she had the infamous affair with.

A few moments later, they both reached for the wine bottle and gave each other a look, before Stacey jumped up and said she’d better go.

Jack started to help her put her coat on but then said: “You can stay if you want?”

He then placed his hand gently around her waist and she turned to him, and after a lingering look the pair started kissing in the hallway.

As the show’s credits rolled, EastEnders fans took to X – formerly Twitter – to rage about the fact Stacey was now hooking up with the third member of the Branning family after Max and his son, Bradley.

One wrote: “Jack Branning and Stacey Slater? yikes that should be illegal.”

Another added: “Don’t know why, but I find the visual of Jack and Stacy getting it on highly disturbing… please don’t let that story line evolve past today, thanks.”

A third tweeted: “i need jack dead because him and stacey can’t become a thing.”

Meanwhile a fourth shared: “Cringing at this Stacey and Jack stuff…”

A fellow viewer commented: “Jack such a weak man, Denise doesn’t deserve that man. Useless man.”

But Jack said she could stay if she wanted and the pair were soon kissing

EastEnders airs on BBC One and is available on BBC iPlayer.
